Bollu Likitha, 17, Wins Gold and Sets Commonwealth Record in Powerlifting
Bollu Likitha, at just 17 years old, has made a significant impact on the international powerlifting scene by winning multiple gold medals and establishing a Commonwealth deadlift record at the 2026 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships held in Winnipeg, Canada. Competing in her first international event, Likitha lifted an impressive 120 kg in the squat, 50 kg in the bench press, and a record-breaking 137.5 kg in the deadlift, culminating in a combined total of 307.5 kg. Her achievements not only highlight her strength but also the dedication and financial commitment of her family, particularly her mother, who invested approximately ₹4.5 lakh to facilitate her participation in the championship.
The financial burden of competing internationally is substantial, with ₹4,00,500 allocated for air tickets, accommodation, and competition entry fees, alongside an additional ₹50,000 for miscellaneous expenses. Likitha's mother has shouldered this entire cost, especially after the loss of Likitha's father during her childhood. This support has been crucial in enabling Likitha to pursue her passion for powerlifting.

Likitha's journey has been marked by previous successes, including medals at national championships and the Powerlifting Federation Cup. However, she has expressed concerns about the lack of financial assistance or sponsorship from governmental bodies following her Commonwealth performance. Although she has yet to seek formal support, she plans to approach the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) to secure funding for future competitions.
In the coming months, Likitha aims to transition from the sub-junior category to competing in junior and senior divisions, aspiring to break more records and represent India on the global stage. Her story serves as an inspiring example of resilience and dedication in the face of obstacles, showcasing the potential of young athletes in the sport of powerlifting.
