In a 2024 interview, Vickery expressed how bodybuilding provided him with a renewed sense of purpose. "I needed a challenge, something outside my comfort zone, and I thought shall I do a bodybuilding show?" he recounted, reflecting on his initial competition where he placed third. His commitment to bodybuilding has resulted in a striking physical transformation, with Vickery now looking almost unrecognizable from his days as a rugby player.
Vickery's journey into bodybuilding was not his first attempt at a new career post-rugby. He initially ventured into the culinary world, winning the 2011 series of Celebrity MasterChef and opening a restaurant in Cheltenham. Unfortunately, this venture faced significant setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately leading to its closure in January 2024 and contributing to his financial woes.
Facing Financial and Personal Turmoil
Amidst these challenges, Vickery filed for bankruptcy in February 2024, citing debts exceeding £97,000. His financial struggles were compounded by personal issues, including the end of his marriage, which he described as a difficult period filled with reflection and emotional turmoil. "It's been f***ing difficult," he shared candidly, acknowledging the complex interplay between his personal and professional life.
Despite these setbacks, Vickery's decision to embrace bodybuilding marked a pivotal moment in his recovery. He recognized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, particularly as he navigated the emotional landscape following his divorce. "Going through divorce, somebody said, 'Don't let drink become your friend,' and that really spooked me," he explained, emphasizing how bodybuilding became a healthier alternative to cope with his struggles.
