India's Weightlifting Team Faces Setback as Rishikanta Singh Withdraws
India's weightlifting federation has announced the withdrawal of Chanambam Rishikanta Singh, the country's only male weightlifter, from the upcoming Asian Games due to an injury. This decision significantly reduces India's presence in the weightlifting category, as Rishikanta was the sole male athlete in the squad, which initially included four men and five women but was later reduced to only five sanctioned lifters.
In an email to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) president Sahdev Yadav confirmed that Rishikanta, who competes in the 60 kg category, is unable to participate on medical grounds. The email stated, "This is to inform you that Chanambam Rishikanta Singh, 60 kg men athlete, is unable to participate in the Asian Games due to an injury. Accordingly, his candidature/participation for the Asian Games stands withdrawn on medical grounds."

Impact of Rishikanta's Withdrawal on Team
Rishikanta, who previously secured a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, is reportedly dealing with a knee injury. His withdrawal means that India will not have any male representation in weightlifting at the Asian Games, further diminishing the nation's chances of success in this discipline. The women's team, however, will still feature prominent lifters, including Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu (49kg), Gyaneshwari Yadav (53kg), Seram Nirupama Devi (61kg), and Harjinder Kaur (69kg).

Chanu, who is expected to lead the women's team, has also been facing her own challenges with training overload and some injury concerns. This latest setback for Indian weightlifting comes on the heels of a series of doping cases that have already affected the federation's reputation and athlete participation. As the Asian Games approach, the absence of Rishikanta will be felt, and the focus now shifts to the remaining athletes who will represent India in this prestigious event.
