Rio Byrd Shines at Special Olympics USA Games with Four Gold Medals

As the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games conclude in Minneapolis, athletes from Special Olympics North Carolina are returning home with a collection of medals, memorable experiences, and inspiring stories of perseverance. Among the standout performers is Wake County athlete Rio Byrd, who excelled in powerlifting, capturing four gold medals in her events. The 22-year-old competed in the bench press, deadlift, squat, and combination events, impressively setting two personal records along the way.

Byrd, who dedicates herself to training three times a week, expressed her surprise at her success. "I was a little nervous at first," she remarked. "But once the powerlifting competition was over, I felt really good." Her remarkable achievements contributed to Team North Carolina's medal count, as she was one of 36 athletes and seven unified partners representing the state in Minneapolis.

Byrd emphasized the organization's role in helping athletes discover their strengths and overcome challenges, highlighting the importance of such support in their journeys.

Celebrating Inclusive Achievements in Cheerleading

North Carolina's success was not limited to powerlifting. The Durham County cheer team also made headlines by earning gold in the Unified Small Team Level 1 division, a historic achievement as they became the first cheer squad from Special Olympics North Carolina to participate in the USA Games. This accomplishment underscores the inclusive spirit of the Special Olympics, where athletes with and without intellectual disabilities compete side by side.

Inspiration and Community Impact

As the Games come to a close, Byrd is eager to return home and hopes her success will inspire others. "Just go for it. You might surprise yourself," she encourages fellow athletes and those considering participation in sports. Her journey not only showcases her personal achievements but also serves as a beacon of motivation for others in the community, illustrating the transformative power of sports and the support of organizations like the Special Olympics.

Byrd's story is a testament to the dedication and resilience of athletes, reminding us all of the strength found in perseverance and the importance of community support in achieving greatness.
